A brood mare, called Rayanna was slated to be killed. Someone picked her up at auction intending to use her as a saddle horse along with another horse. It didnt't work out and she was tossed away again. She was deemed too problematic. No human had ridden her. She was picked up by Equine Behaviorist & Rehabilitator, Gary Adams. I renamed her, "Rei", after "Rei" from the word Reiki, Rei - Japanese for " Spirit".
I knew she and I were destined to work together from the first flash glimpse I had of her white mane against her dark body. Its been a slow process of learning patience, respect, trust, confidence .
CAT photographer comes out to shoot. Rei wants to know what
is the box? (Box=Camera). What does SHE have to do with it? I tell her
that its so people can
understand horses better. I try to explain how it takes her image.
That's a little freaky to her. "How do I fit inside that??" she wants to
know. She will be the model for the species I tell her People will see a
likeness of her and understand her, and horses better," I say. She
likes that. We
work on reiki, energy, and coming over on a whistle trick. That's the
play part, the game which is rewarded with "food". SHe likes that, for a
this day I realized a huge shift. Rei sees Melissa coming, and we both
stand side by side next to each other watching her as she approaches.
is more alert than usual, and assumes a protective stance. Interesting I
think. She’s unclear. Does she protect me? or do I
protect her? We've come a huge way to be at this point. I know that I
now have to be very clear
with her, and have to establish respect.
Another bigger box. This time it's my husband Henry who is shooting video. There’s a bunch of hay that was left in the pen and she is totally obsessed with food. Good thing, she"s apparently comfortable with me in there at this point. She has no interest to do any massage, enery work, reiki, just eating. The carrots are ok, and she will work with me a short bit. Ok, she gets it, it’s a game, she’ll play for a little while.
The round pen is now bigger. I ask Gary what the next step
is and we both go in to be with her. He shows me some simple stroking and
touching techniques and says that she has to overcome these fears. He walks
around her in the back, she must overcome this as well. She does fine after a few rounds. Now she’s ready
for bigger stuff.
Two months pass. I hear that Rei is adopted. Yay. Another great ending.
